A Countryside Workation in the Alentejo

Working from anywhere stopped being a promise and became a habit. The question is no longer “can I?” but “where’s it actually worth it?”. A workation — a few days of remote work away from home, not quite a holiday — only goes well when the practical side is sorted. This piece is about that, without too much romance: what you need to work well among cork oaks, and what you get in return.

First, the boring part: internet that holds

The view is useless if the call drops halfway through. Before you book anywhere to work, check three things: whether there’s fibre or cable Wi-Fi (not just mobile data), whether it handles video calls, and whether there’s phone signal as a backup. In the countryside, coverage is anything but guaranteed — asking saves you a nasty surprise at nine on Monday morning.

At Raíz the Wi-Fi is reliable precisely because we know a lot of people come here to work. A morning video call shouldn’t be an act of faith.

Where you actually sit to work

A proper desk changes the day. Working from the bed looks good in photos and wrecks your back by day three. Before you book, check that there’s:

  • a table and chair you can sit at for hours without twisting yourself into knots;
  • sockets nearby and natural light that doesn’t glare straight onto the screen;
  • shade outside, for the tasks that don’t need a screen — reading, thinking, a voice-only call.

In the Alentejo summer, the shaded deck is the best office you’ll get. A meeting taken on foot among the trees still counts as work, and feels considerably better.

The rhythm that works: focus in the morning, beach in the afternoon

The advantage of coming to the countryside isn’t working more hours — it’s working them better. What tends to work is easy to say and hard to do at home:

Deep-work mornings

Start early, while the hills are still cool and the phone is out of reach. The first three or four hours, with no meetings, are the most productive of the day. Without the interruptions of the office or the household to-do list tugging at you, you get through in one session what sometimes drags across a whole day.

Light afternoons

Save the shallow work — email, admin, short calls — for after lunch. Or shut the laptop and get in the water. The Comporta beaches are about 25 minutes away; you can see the surroundings on the area page. Working in the morning to keep the afternoon free is really the whole trick of a workation.

Evenings that close the day

With no commute home and no notifications blinking, the evening arrives slowly. A fire, a dark sky full of stars, real silence. This is what no city café gives you, however good the coffee.

Why midweek

If you have flexibility, pick Monday to Thursday. For three reasons:

  • It’s usually cheaper. Outside weekends and public holidays, many places charge lower rates. If the dates suit you, midweek pays off.
  • It’s calmer. Empty beaches, trails to yourself, no crowds. For someone who came to work, the quiet is the product.
  • You focus better. Fewer people around means less noise — the literal kind and the other kind.

The minimum stay is two nights, which is already enough to settle into a rhythm. With three or four, the change shows up in both the work and the head.

A house for two, or for one

Raíz was designed for two people, in Santa Margarida da Serra, up in the Serra de Grândola, 1h15 from Lisbon. You can come as a pair and work in shifts — one outside, one at the table — or come alone and have the whole house as an office. A full kitchen so you don’t depend on restaurants, a private bathroom, air conditioning and heating for August heat and January cold, parking at the door. The essentials, so that work is the only thing you have to think about.

It isn’t for everyone

A countryside workation asks for some autonomy. If you need in-person meetings every day, a big second monitor, or the buzz of a full co-working space, this isn’t for you. If your work fits on a laptop and you gain from silence, few things beat a focused morning among cork oaks. Saying that plainly saves disappointed bookings.

FAQ

Does the Wi-Fi handle video calls? Yes. The Wi-Fi at Raíz is reliable and built for people who come to work, video calls included. If you have a specific question about your setup, ask before you book — we’ll answer honestly.

How many days make sense for a workation? From two nights (the minimum stay) you already feel the difference. Three to four nights is where the rhythm settles and the work truly pays off.

Can I work and go to the beach the same day? That’s the plan. Focus in the morning, beach in the afternoon. With Comporta about 25 minutes away, you can close the laptop at lunchtime and be on the sand soon after.

Is midweek really better? For working, almost always. Calmer, often cheaper, and the beaches and trails all but empty. If your dates are flexible, take advantage of it. More questions on the FAQs page.

If you want to swap the office for a few days among cork oaks, check the dates and book Raíz.
